Switch Mode Power Supplies

Switched-mode power supplies or SMPS are electronic power supply units that transmit power from a source to a load. An example of a source would be a battery or the electric grid. The load would be any electronic equipment plugged into the unit like a personal computer.

The main function of a power supply is to provide a reliable output voltage no matter what the input voltage may be. There are two kinds of power supplies, linear and switch-mode. Linear designed power supplies and switched-mode power supply.

The difference being, SMPS operate on a greater efficiency, are smaller in size, are lighter in weight and generate less heat.

Ofcourse there are also some disadvantages to SMPS, for example it's more complex design, the generation of high-amplitude, high frequency energy and a ripple voltage leading to harmonic frequencies.

A low-pass filter must also be used to block the high-amplitude, high frequency energy so as to avoid electromagnetic interference or EMI.

SMPS can be categorized into the following four types:

  • Rectifier = AC in , DC out
  • Voltage converter / Current converter = DC in, DC out
  • Frequency changer / Transformer = AC in, AC out
  • Inverter = DC in, AC out

SMPS can also be classified according to their circuit topology, with the main two types being Non-isolated topologies and Isolated topologies SMPS. An easy way to remember which is which is isolated topology SMPS always have a transformer included.
